NH3 or Ammonia - the new buzz in the alternative fuel industry

NH3 or Ammonia has been used as a high energy density fuel for a long time. NASA even used it in its X15 rocket plane. NH3 can be used in modified petrol or diesel engines and probably jet engines.

NH3 has a reasonable energy density when compared to Diesel or Petrol fuel and can be safely transported and handled. It is today cheaper than gasoline or diesel at about $400 US / ton.

When spilled its no issue as NH3 in 20% dilution is used as one of the main fertilizers world wide.

Need to clean the kitchen? NH3 in appropriate solution is a great household cleaner.

Alcohol as a fuel + Hydrogen booster for petrol engine

This is a short 2 min video taken at yesterdays demonstration of how to distill, and then run an engine on, alcohol. The next one (below) shows Gian describing a simple hydrogen/oxygen splitter he uses in an older Suzuki 4X4, which runs on a combination of petrol, hydrogen and oxygen.

Amphora Society make this video available on their site. This is an Auckland engineer who saw it coming and went to work. I can't seem to get it to embed into this post, but maybe Rimu can help with that.

The Amphora Society is designing a fuel ethanol still capable of producing 40-50 gallons of fuel ethanol a day. Fed with regular fermented wash the first prototype, shown here, delivered 95% abv fuel fuel ethanol in a steady stream, stopping during tests only when we ran out of fermented wash to feed it!

Richard Lee is came from Warkworth to meet with some interested parties on Waiheke (including an Auck Univ Engineer) to share the ideas he has about locally grown biomass as a source of alcohol, that could be used as a fuel.

Richard presented ideas gleaned from his study and research into community scale energy production and in particular the book by David Blume - who will be speaking at the Eco Sho in Taupo this October.
