Transition Waiheke is part of the Transition Towns movement: a grass roots approach to making our communities more self-reliant in the face of peak oil and climate change. Now we are seeing connections between these and the current adjustments in the global financial system. Imagine engagement across all sectors of the Waiheke community - in addressing the greatest transition of our time: from oil dependency to a low energy future. Transition Waiheke is held gently by a Core Team, but it is not that team. It is all of us who live here and who see what a magnificent piece of Mother earth we are blessed to live on. It is for all who see the need to actively nurture and defend her.

By working with each other, we can support each other, empower ourselves and get things done. We can seek local solutions. We can experiment and try out new sustainable approaches... local food, local energy, local industry. We won't always know the answers but together we have the energy and innovation to create them.

All are invited to a potluck at 7 Park Road (Millicent McIvor's house), Surfdale on Friday 11 June, 2010 at 6pm. A recently formed Community Garden is just celebrating its 1st birthday. The garden is growing great... now we need to grow our Community- Please join us!

Bring some food, some drink and a musical instrument and we will talk about the bright future of this Community Garden (including the Glass House that has been donated for growing starts) and then make some music.

Free talk on resilient living

A free talk is to be held next month about adapting our lives to the challenges of a post-oil, low-carbon economy.

The “resilient lifestyles” talk introduces a four-class Sustainable Living course covering renewable energy options, efficient water systems, low impact building materials and how to reduce waste at source. The four-week course will cost $30. Those who attend all classes will be eligible for discounts.

Course includes stock/broth preparation, fermented foods, how to make seeds, grains and vegetables more digestible and nutritious, yogurt and paneer making, and sprouting. PERMACULTURE DESIGN COURSE: Friday 30th April - Sunday 16th May. Tutors: Jo Pearsall and Bryan Innes. Jo Pearsall and Bryan Innes are experienced permaculture teachers, members of PINZ and creators of the Ecoshow - they have been practising and teaching permaculture for many years. The course covers sustainable living systems for a wide variety of landscapes and climates and has 5 key components: ETHICS: care of the earth, care of people, limits to consumption/share the surplus.
