Should We Take United Nations’ Projections Seriously?

Much as I do not much like the idea of merely linking to other writers stuff as opposed to writing ones own "original content", this came through on my reading list today and I thought it was well worth sharing.

Should We Take United Nations’ Projections Seriously?

David Suzuki and beyond

He didn't leave us with a lot of hope, and understandably. The population growth statistics, and our impact on the life support systems we depend on, are hard arguments to refute. The biggest thing I was grateful for, was to test the ideas I have been preparing to share at the Signs of Change conference on Monday. I was happy for that, and feel I am on the right track.

Kunstler Rerport: Overpopulation and the Fate of the Yeast People

James Howard KunstlerNov 17, 2009 19:18:00 GMT Share

Every time I do a Q and A after a college lecture, somebody says (with a fanfare of indignation) — so as to reveal their own brilliance in contrast to my foolishness — “You haven’t said anything about overpopulation!”

Population Growth

If you can view this in full screen mode it's impact will be all the greater. However, either way it is hard not to watch this and realise that the logic of comparing humanity to yeast in a petri dish, is not unreasonable.

Fantastic statistics at Gapminder.org

There is a set of amazing statistical animations showing national population trends over the past 50 years.

One of the smartest pieces of graphical presentation I've ever seen.

Here's an example

http://www.gapminder.org/downloads/flash-presentations/has-the-world-bec...

But once you get the hang of it you can correlate diverse trends such as life expectancy vs average income etc.
