On Sunday the 29th of July 2012, we provided 520 fruit trees to local schools, early childhood centres and Transition Town groups. All 520 fruit trees from the 2012 project now have their roots down all over Auckland. The 3 main aims with this project are to support families with lowering their grocery bills, encourage local food production, and teach children how to plant and care for fruit trees. We'd like to thank all the teachers, parents and volunteers for getting involved and sharing our vision of free and healthy food.

The Kai Rakau Project, currently being developed by Emma Williamson and Savannah Carter-Green, is a community based project with view to create a "Mother Orchard" of 3000 fruiting trees and native plantings, in Sanders Reserve, Paremoremo, Auckland New Zealand.

With the donations made on our website and the money we raised on the market day, we went fruit tree shopping. We bought 21 fruit trees for some of our local schools, play centres, kindergartens and to plant with the Friends of Mangawhau on Mangawhau. These trees will be planted on the 14 of August.

Fruit tree planting on Maungawhau

What a great turnout for our fruit tree planting day on Mangawhau on Saturday 14th of August. A rainy day is apparently the best day to plant trees, so this was definitely the perfect day to dig in!

Thank you to everyone involved for taking action in transforming our community into a more sustainable place. This was a team effort to bring free and healthy food into to Mount Eden that will be a nice treat on your walk up Maungawhau.

Fruit trees for Auckland

In 2008 the Mount Eden Village People, took the idea of planting fruit trees for local communities to the Eden/Albert Community Board. The Board accepted their proposal and provided funds to plant 131 fruit trees on Council land.

These trees will be planted next to playgrounds, in parks and reserves and streets in the wider community of Mt Eden, Epsom and Mt Albert during June and July 2010.

This fun 2 minute clip (a big thanks to www.waiheke.tv) shows the energy behind the Fabulous Fruit Tree initiative, which has the vision for Waiheke becoming the Fruit Bowl of the Hauraki Gulf, and has set a target of 20,000 fruit and nut trees planted on public and private land over the next 10 years.
