Buses and Trains, What About Boats?

It's becoming clear to me that boats are going to become a really important part of transport and trade between communities in these islands as the world goes down the other side of the fossil fuel bell curve. The other day a few of us were poring over a map of Aotearoa, looking at Karamea, Golden Bay, Marahau, Motueka, and even Wellington, and how they could all be linked much more closely by boat than by road or rail. Water transport could even help to link Wellington with the Hutt, Kapiti, Wairarapa etc if the roads were to become impassable.

Ships sitting idle

From the NY Times: About 700 ships are currently just sitting around doing nothing, moored off Singapore. Apparantly there is not much cargo needing moving these days.

The cost of shipping a 40-foot container from Shanghai to the United States has risen to $8,000, compared with $3,000 early in the decade.

CIBC World Markets calculates that the recent surge in shipping costs is on average the equivalent of a 9 percent tariff on trade. “The cost of moving goods, not the cost of tariffs, is the largest barrier to global trade today,” the report concluded, and as a result "has effectively offset all the trade liberalization efforts of the last three decades."
