A reminder that our next Kingsland meeting will be this Sunday’s walk through Kingsland with a view to look at possible sites for another community garden and visiting interesting, strategic, ugly, beautiful, random areas. See parts of Kingsland you never knew existed and catch up with interesting people at the same time.

We moved to Kingsland 8 months back and want to explore whether there is energy and interest in (re-)kick-starting a Transition Town movement here.
So we’re hosting a first exploratory meeting on Wed 27th July at our house. It will be a chance to meet each other, share ideas and see what people’s interests are. We envision a Transition Town to be very locally based in Kingsland, and to start small so it doesn’t become just one more thing to add to busy lives ;)

Why: To provide healthy local organic food for children and an opportunity for children to learn how to grow their own food

What: I aim to emulate Ecomatters' successful organic garden pilot program that has helped several Waitakere City schools develop and maintain gardens and orchards by running a similar scheme in Mt. Albert and surrounding suburbs. Waterview school and Owairaka school have already expressed interest in being involved.
All going well, I will then look to expand the scheme to other parts of Auckland.

I have recently purchased a starter kit for making feta. i am trying to track down some raw milk. The recipe says need 10 Litres! Which is more than i need or wish to pay for. Needless to say i would like a partner in crime. If anyone is interested in making some cheese with me let me know.

Fruit Tree Planting - Action Plan

UPDATE: Fruit Tree Planting Project has its own website.

The project to plant Fruit Trees in public spaces organised by Judith Holtebrinck and the Mt Eden Village People has been growing over the last year and half and its confirmed that 131 fruit trees will be planted on Auckland City council land mid 2010.

Planting fruit trees in your community in Auckland

Our vision for a sustainable future in our community is to have fruit trees available for everyone.
In a time where food and oil prices are rising, we believe that planting fruit trees now is essential
for the future of the next generation and for the future of our community.

The goal of this group is to work with the council, schools,
playgrounds/kindergarten and community groups to plant fruit trees.

We are a group in Mt Eden village supporting our community, mainly the businesses, to minimise the waste that usually goes into landfill.

We offer shop owners alternatives to plastic bags and compostable and biodegradable food containers and help them to find recycling options.

Working towards ‘Zero Waste’ is possible. Parts of Europe have been exemplary of how to create efficient resource cycles and how to encourage waste minimization by implementing regulations and by educating people, especially the youth.
