How to update the website and use the announcement email list.

This is some simple advice aimed at members of the initiating group and other group leaders in TV473. We aim to share the work of publicising our activities around so it doesn't become a chore for one or two people. It's easy to do if you can use email and a word processor.

There is more to getting your fruit trees off to a healthy start than you might think and the group will demonstrate how to check you have chosen the right site for the particular tree, and how to prepare the hole. (If the weather is bad, postponed to Saturday 25 June)

Amid growing climate, energy and financial crises, a strong and resilient local economy is essential to help us meet our basic needs locally, support local enterprise, create local employment, keep currency circulating locally, create parallel systems of exchange in case the money system tightens or falters, to allow us to trade locally on foot and by bike, to diversify our economy and support ourselves and our neighbours.

The Transition Valley 473 Local Economy Group is a new group forming to explore how best to keep our local economy strong and resilient.

Fruit tree and vegetable gardening workshop

Wear your gumboots and bring along your gardening gloves!
Help (or learn how to) choose good sites for planting fruit trees and currant or berry bushes. We will prepare the holes, ready for planting in a couple of months time.
We will also be preparing a vegetable garden from scratch and putting in some winter vegetables. Come and see how it’s done, or to lend a hand.
Want to learn how to improve soil that is less than ideal for vegetable growing? The community garden site has acidic soil and poor drainage and we will be taking steps to address this.

Transition Valley 473 Transport Group

TV473's transport group is building resiliance in North East Valley by promoting and encouraging land use and transport options which are not fossil fuel dependant.

We have organised bike repair days where people can get their bikes are fixed up and learn repair skills. We have run a public meeting about improving north road for residents and road users by slowing traffic and enhancing infrastructure. We have made submissions on the Dunedin City Council's annual plan.

TV473's transport group are pleased to host a public meeting to discuss slowing traffic speeds on North Road. Dr Koorey will discuss research from New Zealand and overseas highlighting advantages of slowing traffic, and explain how to get speed limits changed.

Urgent - letter to ODT supporting public transport

Hi all I was hugely heartened by Phillip Cole's piece in the ODT yesterday, and thought it would be well worth our supporting it. I have drafted a letter to the editor. If you are interested, could you please add your name to it, copied below and send back to me by tomorrow morning. Wednesday. You don't have to be a PCTT local, as I've added the word 'supporter' and anyway this is a city-wide issue. It would be good to get feedback on the letter too - has been drafted in a bit of a hurry but think the most important thing is to get its message out there asap. Regards Nicky

Come along to a pot-luck tea, to chat, eat, drink, and catch up with Frank Budding, who was involved with the first 'official' transition town, Totnes, in the UK. Kids most welcome too.

Everyone very welcome, whether you are living out in Port or just a friendly supporter from anywhere at all!

It will be the last get-together of the year, so plan is just to have fun and maybe throw in some ideas of just how exactly glorious - and resilient - we want our place to be.
