Sowing and Growing - Waiheke Cinema

Sowing and Growing
7:30pm Tuesday 16th December - Waiheke Community Cinema

New Zealand nurseries couldn't keep up with the demand from home gardeners this year and ran out of strawberry seedlings, horticulture supply companies are reporting record turnover, the sales of Kings seeds increased 60% from last year, the list goes on. These NZ trends are our version of what can be seen happening all across the industrialised world, as people become aware of the need to move from the globalised oil dependent food supply to localised, appropriately diverse means of meeting our food needs.

As a Waiheke community we are taking on the challenge of growing our own and many new people are coming on board and bringing their fresh energy to the task of building some serious resilience into our island food system.

Tuesday night's diverse programme at the cinema will include presentations and films. Pete Russell will share his insights in a fast moving presentation of global trends and introduce a new concept called Ooooby. James Samuel will talk about and show pictures to highlight the growth in local food growing initiatives. These will be interwoven with a carefully selected range of short films which will be sure to inspire both the most experienced as well as the novice just-getting-started gardeners in the room.

With the numbers of people becoming involved in the food projects on Waiheke, there is an abundance of support for anyone interested in learning more. Bring your questions, an open mind and a big heart and be part of a change which is sweeping the world.

There is a high probability you will leave this Sowing and Growing evening at the cinema, excited about the future, and proud to be a Waihekean.
