Learn how to create your own trees at a tree grafting workshop.

From a simple stem you can learn how to grow your own trees by coming to a grafting workshop presented by Transition Towns Kingsland on Sunday 22 February.

Apart from a few bits n’ bobs everything will be provided including yummy treats and refreshments.

Bits n’ Bobs to bring along:

• A grafting knife (or a Stanley knife)
• Secateurs (sharp)
• Grafting tape (this could be the cut off end of a roll of clingfilm.  Cut an even ring about 2cm wide)
• If you would like to have your own apple tree to take away you will need to purchase a rootstock at the workshop for $6 and bring along an apple tree scion. Scions should be current season’s growth, about pencil thickness and straight.  Clip the leaves off straight away and place in a sealed plastic bag in the fridge making sure the scion does not freeze.

What is plant grafting?

Grafting is a method of plant propagation where the tissues of one plant are encouraged to fuse with those of another.

In most cases, one plant is selected for its roots (rootstock) and the other plant is selected for its stems, leaves, flowers or fruits (scion).
