Bill McKibben on Waiheke

Transition Waiheke would like to invite you to a talk by well-known author, activist and 350.org founder Bill McKibben on May 3rd, 4 – 5.30pm at Te Huruhi school hall. Entry by Koha.

We have been very lucky to secure someone of Bills’ expertise and stature on climate change issues and local economic development whilst he visiting NZ.

Bill is the author of several books including “The End of Nature”, a seminal book on climate change and “Deep Economy” an US national bestseller about building local economies.

He is also the founder of 350.org, a rapidly growing global movement working to raise awareness about and action on climate change issues. In only two years 350 has spread across the globe to 50 countries. 350 is the red line for human beings, the most important number on the planet.  Climate science tells us that unless we reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million (ppmv), we will cause huge and irreversible damage to the earth.  The current global concentration of carbon dioxide is 387ppmv and rising 2ppmv each year.

What can we do to turn it around? In his talk Bill McKibben, will discuss:

  • how we can move towards a future which means we start absorbing more carbon than we release
  • the important role for us in ensuring strong action on climate change issues
  • how we can build strong local economies, as part of our response to climate change
  • the importance of December’s UNFCC meeting in Copenhagen, and of a united global movement to combat climate change
  • the importance of climate change planning and emissions reduction targets at a local level
