PARIHAKA DAY: A performance with a difference

Riverside Community 5th Nov,  7pm

Mention the 5th of November and most of us think of Guy Fawkes, but it is also Parihaka Day. This year's commemoration will be a performance with a difference. The play by Motueka playwright Donna McLeod, entitled “My Mother's Tongue” will use Riverside's Spanish speaking visitors as the invading militia. The audience will be fully involved in the re-telling of the story of the invasion of the peaceful village of Parihaka on the 5th of November 1881, and the imprisonment of the charismatic Maori pacifists Te Whiti and Tohu. The performance will be followed by supper and music. Bring a musical instrument if you'd like to participate in an impromptu performance. Everyone welcome. Entry by donation.
