Help Restore Meola Reef
Assist with ecological restoration by removing pest plants around planted areas at Meola Reef Reserve. Meola Reef is located on the edge of the Waitemata Harbour, a few kilometres west of Auckland city centre. The Reef itself is a solidified flow of lava that poured from the Three Kings Volcano about 20,000 years ago. It is the city’s longest lava flow, extending two thirds of the way across the harbour towards Birkenhead!
The reserve is home to a variety of habitats, including mangroves, salt marsh, open pasture and native shrubs. These habitats provide shelter and food for a number of bird species, including the shining cuckoo and even the New Zealand dotterel. For more information or to register Please call Fiona at Conservation Volunteers on 623 7282 or email
