Virtual Orchard
updated 02 Jul 2008
Introduction
By using the same web based google maps as for the Sharing Backyards, we can map the fruit trees on the island. When the first Europeans began making Waiheke their home, there were no supermarkets or even shops of any kind. They had to transport everything to the island, so they quickly set about growing fruit trees. The fruit from many of these trees goes to waste.
Vision
The idea is to make an agreement with the property owner for gathering the fruit and either selling it fresh, or preserving it. The agreement may be to take a percentage of the fruit, and then give a certain amount of preserves, and/or take care of the trees by pruning and feeding them in order to keep them healthy.
The agreements would be recorded as part of the management of this virtual orchard, along with the harvesting, selling and processing of the produce.
