Transition Pt Chevalier Meeting - 12th July 2011
Attendees: Yolanda, Jenny, Chris, Liadin, Jo, Ally, Francisco, Niki, Keith, Deryn
Chair: Yolanda
Apologies: Bruce, Crea, Geoff, Robyn
Minutes: Niki
White roofs project – Painting your roof white reflects heat back into the atmosphere, which is good for reducing global warming and for keeping your home cool. Ian, who runs the project, is happy to come and talk to us, and Liadin will invite him to a meeting.
Purchasing network – Francisco did a bulk order for almond butter, this was very successful, however we got slightly less almond butter than anticipated. We discussed the importance of collectively owning the losses as well as the gains and so Francisco will work out a way of ensuring that he doesn’t carry the loss.
Community garden (Deryn) – The group got some coconut husks mulched for $60. They received an offer for more coconuts, but feel unable to use these. If anyone wants some mulch, please help yourself from the community garden. The group have a dinner together 22nd July, 6pm, to plan working bees and activities, please contact Ally for details.
Craft afternoon – Niki would like to have an afternoon to make sleeves for our song sheets. Also, there is a crafternoon tea, 3rd Saturday of every month, in the Trinity Methodist church hall, corner of New North and Sandringham Rds.
Council’s recycling - Liadin raised the issue of paper in the council bins potentially not being recycled. Deryn and Yolanda will contact someone to find out the fate of paper going into council bins, and email that information out. The next step may then be to publicise the issue and to lobby the council as appropriate.
Paper and plastics – Niki to put out information about the paper recycling options via Pt Chevalier Primary school and Pasadena Intermediate. Soft plastics can be taken to Pt Chevalier Primary school by the Resource Room. It is best to bring them in as compressed as possible. Yolanda is investigating the possibility of getting a frame made for the Pt Chevalier Primary school collection.
McDonalds is opening 24 hours – do we want to protest against that?
Eden-Albert sustainability committee – Yolanda to find out more about what this committee does.
Careers for a sustainable world – Yolanda presented a paper on careers for a sustainable world to career colleagues at a conference – we all congratulated her!
Three ‘good news’ items (Keith) – There are significant innovations in battery cars – a NZer has invented a battery that can be readily recharged, two car manufacturers have started the production of electric cars and there is new technology to convert carbon monoxide into ethanol.
Meeting ended at 8:57pm
