Minutes for Transition Town Point Chevalier Meeting - 9 August 2011

White roofs project – Presentation by Ian. Painting your roof white reflects heat back into the atmosphere, which is good for reducing global warming and for keeping your home cool without hurting your pocket.  Objective of project is to buy time in the global warming battle.  Obama administration has mandated that all Federal building roofs be painted white.  Large commercial enterprises (e.g. Walmart) have adopted policy of white roofs on their buildings.  Saving on the energy costs of air conditioning make this cost effective.

Now on to stage II of his project which is approaching Councils and Businesses to paint their roofs white>  Becoming more time intensive and difficult to fit into need to earn income from his job.  Pt Chev TT can help by spreading the word.  A “1 page” summary is to be prepared and sent out to members.  Ian to provide

Local Board Advisory Panel

Adrian reported that he has been invited to join the Albert-Eden Sustainability Advisory Board.  The SAB has yet to meet; however he understands its role is to advise the AE Board on prioritising initiatives on spending the $150,000 the Board will have to spend over 3 years.  Pt Chev TT can help by offering our support and fowarding initiatives to Adrian.   (For further discusion at September meeting)

Pt Chevalier Primary Expansion

Letter from school has been circulated to members.  Francisco handed out and spoke to letter from Kindergarten. Proposal is for Pt Chev to lose a kindergarten to allow for an expansion to school parking.  Facebook link at SavePtChevKindy.  Links have since been e-mailed to members.

Members urged to attend public meetings at the kindergarten on August 16; and 23 August at the school

Purchasing network – Francisco advised that there will be another order for almond butter soon.

Community garden (Deryn) – The group is going well and plans a spring party on October 1st to celebrate the installation of “Radar’s pump.  Radar’s father will be present.

Music Group – Francisco proposed gathering with a theme of melody.  Suggested date of 25 September at Deryn”s

Council’s recycling  - Liadan reported that paper put in the council bins is not being recycled because it has broken glass mixed up with it. Clean recycling is available through the schemes at Pt Chev Primary and Pasadena Intermediate.

Harbour Bridge walkway – Pathway design launch for Harbour Bridge walk/cycleway will be on 21 August at 3p.m. – corner of Halsey and Jellicoe Sts.  Rod Oram is MC of event.

Gardening Course – There are still places available on the Disability Action’s Master Gardening Course starting on 13 August.  More information available on their website.

Kingsland TT – Had first meeting on 3 August.  Suggestion of having a combined meeting and/or social activity with Grey Lynn, Mt Eden and Kingsland TT groups.  For discussion at September meeting.

Unitec Garden land  – The  Unitec Sustainability Manager has asked if TT is interested in a plot at Unitec.  Interest expressed and Yolanda to follow up.  Robyn suggested mental health clients could utilise a block and funding might be available for them.
