Minutes of Meeting 13 March 2012
updated 19 Mar 2012
PT CHEV TRANSITION TOWN
Minutes of Meeting 13 March 2012 7.30-9.10pm Yolanda’s house.
Present: Yolanda, Kat (Welcome!), Adrienne, Jenny, Geoff, Deryn, Anna (also Welcome!), Niki & Crea.
Apologies: Ally, Bruce, Keith.
Chair: Yolanda. Minutes: Deryn
Item – Deryn reminded people about what looks like being a really informative, stimulatin, thought-provoking seminar by Dr Elisabet Sahtouris (a BIG name in this area) From Globalisation to Living Economies, on Wednesday 28th March, 6-7:30pm in the Owen G Glenn Building at Auckland University. Whoever would like to go, contact Deryn mhresrch@ihug.co.nz to share transport.
Item – Geoff described the latest iteration of The Treasure Hunt, now known as Our Amazing Place Community Treasure Hunt, happening in Unsworth Heights on Sat 24 March (as well as enquiries from places as diverse as Lyttleton & Whanganui) & asked for anyone interested in going along to do data collection (“It’s great fun!”) to contact him (gbridgman@unitec.ac.nz). Hooray for you Kat! Unsworth Heights has just done an asset-mapping process so that’s great consciousness raising.
Item – Yolanda drew attention to & handed round for signing the Greenpeace petition against fracking. “What the frack are they doing!” Some discussion about how hand signed petitions being taken more notice of than email/net-based ones. And about numbers needed. Anyone who wants to can download a few blank pages from the Greenpeace website & join in gathering signatures. Crea to find more info on the f process for us all.
Also showed the latest development in eliminating plastic bags – from the Ecostore, a sweet little pouch containing 5 small strong, tulle (nylon), reusable, washable drawstring baglets for different loose products at yr. local s’market. Long long lasting & only $20. Doing your bit for the environment and supporting creative initiatives – what could be better?
Item – Crea brought us up-to-date with the latest on the safe disposal of batteries project (following on from the Mt Eden TT example). Wonderfully VideoEzy is happy to allow an installation (well, we can think of it as public art/public artefact can’t we?) on the counter, and a lively, lengthy discussion ensued about the sign’s imaging (a splendid cartoon apparently, designed & to be executed thanks to Alister Kitchen, another eco-hero), wordage, placement, bucket container etc. Various people offered themselves to pursue aspects such as, what happens to the batteries once collected (Geoff), finding out more from Mt Eden (Crea), purchasing a suitable container from Hammer Hardware (Adrienne), enquiring from Lynne Green & the Waste Away system in Grey Lynn 2020(who’s doing that?), checking the madness of the Hazmobile website saying AA & AAA’s are okay for landfill (Deryn – who also foolishly volunteered to write a small fact sheet for the back of the bucket in case anyone asks for more info).
Item – Niki spoke movingly about (yet another) Auckland City public questionnaire/submission process – everyone would have received a mass of info about the 10 YEAR PLAN – submissions to which have to be in by March 23!! Go online – Have Your Say! Even if you only take a moment to make a comment about public transport you will have done another useful thing. Do this at http://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/EN/AboutCouncil/PlansPoliciesPublications/Long_term_plan/Pages/Home.aspx
Even if you never come to meetings or can’t get involved face-to-face, you can have just as strong an effect!
Item - Green Screen Special Presentation: Psychology for a Better World (with our very own Niki), Sunday, March 25 at 7:30pm, Garden Room, Grey Lynn Community Centre, 510 Richmond Road, Grey Lynn, plus the documentary "Cities on Speed" about two radical mayors of Bogota, Colombia
Meeting closed (see top of page if you want to know when) with veges.
Next meeting is on Tuesday 10th April at Anne & Walters house, 12 Alberta St.
