No oil - what happens next?

A move to establish the Bay of Islands as a group of ‘Transition Towns’ is gathering momentum.

The thrust is to promote a lifestyle which will build a community that is in a strong position to face challenges ahead.

The group wants people to think seriously about key factors:

- We live in an oil dependent world.

- We have got to this level of oil dependency in a short space of time.

- In getting to this point, we have used vast amounts of oil.

- As yet, we haven’t got a plan for when the oil supply is not plentiful.

- Most of us avoid thinking about what might happen when the oil runs out, or becomes prohibitively expensive.

- Life with less oil and energy is inevitable and it’s better to plan for it than to be taken by surprise.

- Our society needs to rebuild the resilience to be able to cope with these ‘energy shocks’.

- Climate change and peak oil both require urgent action.

- We need to act together.
