Meeting minutes – Tuesday 8 May - Transition Pt Chevalier
updated 11 May 2012
Present: Keith, Niki, Adrian, Bruce, Ally, Yolanda, Deryn, Nadine, Chris, Anna, Jenny, Adrienne, 4 University of Auckland students from Masters in Urban Planning: Anna, Dane, Hamish & Sandrine.
Chair: Niki Minutes: Yolanda Apologies: Geoff, Crea, Ruth.
Niki – Discussed the bringing of goods/produce to give away: in the future we must be aware that when people bring things that they must be taken by others.
After discussion with some regular attendees, Niki will organise a day for discussion about the future of Transition Pt Chev, how to move forward etc..
Adrienne – Had a discussion with Keryn at Pt Chev school – the soft plastic collection is going well. Keryn is planning to do an e-waste drive, for computer related waste in the near future.
Adrian – Is on the Sustainability Advisory Board, a subgroup of the Albert-Eden Board. There is a pool of money for projects. Discussed the idea of fruit trees in parks/reserves around Pt Chev. There will be a call again for applications for funding in the near future – do we want to plan for this? The Uni students may be able to assist us with this in some way.
Keith – The Auckland council are looking at the cost for pontoons at Pt Chev beach (for swimming to and jumping off). Transition Pt Chev would like to write a letter to wholeheartedly support and endorse this.
Deryn – will send out some notes about the talk given by Elizabeth Sartoris. Also she recommended a look at the latest TED talk by Rob Hopkins, the founder of Transition Towns.
Bruce – There is an article in the recent local paper about Ruth McClure and family who have installed solar water heating. Theirs is the first house in a scheme to encourage this. A picture is in the paper with Len Brown and the family.
Anna – Has recently organised a bag making session, an alternative to plastic bags for fruit and vege shopping.
She is keen to put fruit trees on berms – discussion about how to best go about this, talking with neighbours, learning about how to best care for them, getting support. Keith said he is happy to be contacted about best varieties and care information.
Yolanda – Ellen and Yolanda will meet with Graham Dikes, from the Auckland Council this Friday at 3pm at the community garden. He is visiting community gardens in Auckland to find out more about how they operate. Others welcome to join if interested.
University of Auckland students from Masters in Urban Planning: Anna, Dane, Hamish & Sandrine.
Attached to these minutes is an info sheet about the project that these 4 students are proposing. We discussed various options for a project and agreed that planning for fruit trees in parks/reserves or a community orchard in Pt Chevalier would be of great benefit to us.
The group will create a proposal, check these elements with us by emailing a feedback survey to the wider Transition Pt Chev group and then they will put in the research required to create a plan for us. How this will look is not yet decided, and will depend on the responses from us.
There will probably be information about how to go about planning for something like this, what is required by council etc..
There will be a tight deadline, so when you receive the survey and are interested in responding, please do so within the time frame given.
