Transition Pt Chevalier Meeting - 11 September 2012
updated 12 Sep 2012
Attendees: Crea, Luke, Adrian, Deryn, Bruce, Jenny, Chris
Apologies: Yolanda, Ally, Matt, Keith, Geoff, Guido
Minutes: Niki
1. Niki talked about a podcast from a Canadian radio programme on infinite games and how this can help us understand the sustainability movement, here is the link to the show, it is Part 4 of beyond atheism - http://www.cbc.ca/ideas/podcasts/
2. A link on what to plant when: www.gardengrow.co.nz
3. Also of interest is the interview with Fiona Eady the head gardener at Larnach Castle, on National Radio (sorry, I can’t find the link!)
4. Jenny discussed her visit to the Unitec community gardens, there are individual plots all in a permaculture setting. They need support, and she was wondering if anyone wanted to share a plot with her to plant onions, potatoes, garlic, kumara, pumpkin etc. Please get in touch with Jenny if you are interested.
5. Luke is on a Committee for Auckland Future Leaders group and they are looking for community groups and initiatives to support. If you have any ideas please get in touch with Luke. lkireg@aut.ac.nz. To find out more search for Future Auckland Leaders.
6. Community orchard – a gang of us were at Premier Reserve the Saturday before last and planted seven trees, two persimmons, three citrus, avocado, custard apple and banana. It felt amazing to be digging up a park. Initially we were given permission for twenty trees and then it was reduced to ten. Adrian is keen to do more on an unnamed reserve on Walmer Ave. The council is happy for us to do this. Wait for an email invitation to follow. Adrian has identified several other potential spots with the council.
7. Purchasing group – Niki will be putting out a Farm Butchery and Ceres order soon.
8. Carrot mob – Crea discussed how this was started in San Francisco. It involves people all going to a retail shop and spending money with a portion of it going to a sustainability project. There is currently a global project that is attempting to investigate a wind or solar powered ship. Crea is keen for us to work with a local business to arrange a carrot mob, so it is something we can think about.
9. My backyard farmer – Luke discussed this. It originated in Portland. You pay to have your garden set up and you pay for getting it tended and harvested, about the equivalent of getting a vegetable food box. One backyard farmer can do about 30 people’s gardens. Adrian suggested it would probably have to be seasonal as the gardens wouldn’t be productive for much of the year.
10. Community garden meeting – Albert/Eden are holding a community meeting next Wednesday evening, which anyone can go to.
11. Grey Lynn festival – November 17, are we interested in attending?
12. Dance-walk –Along Pt Chev Rd, leaving at 11am Saturday October 6. We will meet on the corner of Dignan St and Pt Chev Rd. Music will be provided, if you have a music selection that can plugged into a speaker, bring it along. Tamborines etc are optional. Anyone keen to video it? It will be postponed if raining, text Niki 02102796822 for executive decision about the weather. Fancy dress allowed but not required. Feel free to bring friends and advertise on FB etc.
13. Invitation to Albert/Eden workshop on the Albert/Eden community plan. Tuesday morning October 2nd, Luke will go to represent Transition Pt Chevalier.
Meeting finished 9.15pm.
Next meeting at 5 Boscawen, October 9, 7.30pm
