Some Waiheke news and events
Here are some items of Transition Waiheke news and announcements of upcoming events.
What's been happening
Discussions with Right House resulted in the recently published and promoted energy survey. If you live on Waiheke and havent filled in the survey yet, it's not too late to do so online at www.greenwaiheke.co.nz The information is a first step towards greater local energy resilience, with the vision of implementing community owned power generation.
Community gardens are popping up all over the place, and if we include the new community orchard in Surfdale (see video), we now have 5 community garden sites. I have heard we have three dairy cows on the island now (all in different places). Maybe my youthful years spent working on dairy farms and hand milking my parent's house cow may come in handy.
Screenings of documentary film continue at the cinema. The last one was Crude Awakening, and the next one might be Garbage Warrior.
What's coming up
Food Meeting at the Marae: On August 10th (this Sunday) we are hosting an Open Space event at Piritahi Marae to discuss creative means for meeting Waiheke's food needs in a post peak oil world. For those of you unfamiliar with Open Space Technology, it is a method which allows groups to self-organise to deal with complex issues in a limited time. Participants create and manage their own agenda in parallel working sessions around a central theme. Someone from each group will then report to the larger group at the end of the event. Pam Oliver will be facilitating this event.
Daniel Nepia will be joining us. He is a facilitator for Transition Towns with a focus on Transition Iwi. Daniel is also a permaculture teacher and the Sustainability Advisor to Connected Media whose documentary "Outlook for Someday" recently screened on Maori TV. Daniel also conducts workshops in Deep Ecology and leads trainings in functional household land use design.
The event kicks off with a Powhiri at 9.00am. Participants are asked to gather at the entrance to the Marae beforehand. Please bring finger food to share and a suggested donation of $5 - $10.
Eco Show bus
A bus or several buses are being organised for getting people to the Eco Show in Taupo - October 10th - 12th. If you are interested in going to this great annual event and want to travel in style, enjoy good company and know that your travel choice is having minimum impact, then drop Richard Lee a note (please make the subject of your email "Eco Show Bus"). Richard's email: kohumaru_lees@ihug.co.nz
Alcohol - It's a Gas!
Henry Ford designed the first mass-produced automobile, the famed Model T Ford, to run on pure anhydrous (ethanol) alcohol—he said it was "the fuel of the future". On Thursday next week we have Richard Lee coming to Waiheke to speak about Alcohol as a community sourced and locally produced fuel. I have invited some Auckland university staff to join in that discussion. If you are interested in being part of that meeting (10am to 1pm) please give me a call on 8737.
Currency
A preliminary meeting was had on the subject of a local currency last weekend. Bryan Innes from Taupo is coming up to Waiheke specifically for this one, to present his Genuine Wealth saving system, developed after a visit to the Swedish JAK Bank. This follow up meeting is planned for next Wednesday, and if you would like to be part of that, please give James a call on 8737
Electric Assisted Bicycles
I have been trialling a number of these, some on the island, and by the weekend I will have a very nice sports style electric-assisted mountain bike you can take for a spin. It will do around 60Km on about a $2 charge, and make the Waiheke hills seem like a walk in the park. Let me know if you want to check this out. For anyone spending $40-50 a week on petrol to travel mostly alone in a car, this is a form of transport that is worth looking into, as it would easily pay for itself inside one year. Every purchase on Waiheke (or through the Transition Network dealership we have been given) will support the Transition Towns work.
