PARIS: One of the most extraordinary endeavours in the history of environmental campaigning gets put to a worldwide test today. Home, a two-hour documentary lavishly filmed by one of the world's greatest nature photographers, is being released without charge around the globe, marking arguably the boldest single-handed attempt to boost green awareness.
t hopes to reach 100 million people in a score of languages by harnessing the collective power of YouTube. It will also be screened on 100 TV channels, in parks, schools and museums, for free or at low cost in cinemas and as cut-price DVDs.
Three years in the making, the fruit of filming in 55 countries and blessed by a scattering of celebrities, Home portrays a beautiful planet endangered by human hand and mired in inequality. Its goal is to shock people into clamouring for change at every level _ in government and corporate policies and in their own lifestyle, too.
The release comes as 192 nations are striving to craft a United Nations pact on climate change that will also channel aid to developing countries, spur renewable energy and tackle deforestation.
"In 10 years' time, if we do nothing the planet is screwed." says its director, Yann Arthus-Bertrand."If we want to make an impact with this film, it has to be seen by the maximum number of people. We are hoping for a massive, hard, brutal consciousness of the problem."
