Hi all,

I have been getting the weekly TT forum and blog updates for about 6 months now. Reading it has been key in refining the thoughts and convictions of my wife and I around how we should be positioning ourselves in the coming years to best cope with the change that is to come. Reading the updates helped gel the decision to buy an acre of land close to New Plymouth (6km). Our aim is to expand on our current residential plot of fruit trees, veges and chooks into something larger and more self reliant, but stilll be close enough to town to enable non-personal car options for transport. So, the house is sold, we moved into a rental 3 weeks back, and the transititon begins.

While I (and possibly many people) have been silent on the site, what I wanted to say is "Thank You" to all those blog writters and forum posters who are putting up their thoughts and links  to other sites of interest. Some of us may be quiet online, but we still read your thoughts and are encouraged to take positive steps to create a more stable future in times of change. The TT community helps us to feel more 'normal' in our views, not the eccentice frindge which we sometimes get labelled as and which makes us more hesitant to trust out instincts and take action. Thanks for the inspiration and support. Sometimes the treads of connectivity are not visible, but still they grow...

Thank you for sharing that

It's not often we see news like this posted on www.tt.org.nz but this message and story was wonderful to read. I trust you'll keep us posted either on here via a blog with pics :-)

Hey James, Sure will. You may

Hey James,
Sure will. You may not remember, but about 12 months ago I started the 'Becoming more self reliant' group on Ooooby and you sent me some links to start a conversation with group members about self sustainability vs. self reliance. So, a double thanks for your input there too.

Smiles, Laine

1 year on.

Well, 1 year later our conviction to create a more self reliant lifestyle has taken some slow and then some big steps forward. After an 9 month land negotiation, planning, a few council hurdles, too many lawyers and nearly walking away from it all, we managed to purchase our land and got consent to relocate a house on (best Trade Me purchase ever!).

The focus of 2013 has been getting the earthworks complete and house and other infrastructure sorted. The house has been orientated for good north sun, is well insulated, has wet back fire and solar hot water installed and we have a Rotaloo composting toilet in action. Thanks to the work of Kama Burwell, we also have Taranaki's first mulch basin grey water system - low tech and low budget. The site has a bore which is pumped to a header tank up on the hill, so we only need a pressure pump for the shower and we have water when we have no mains power. The garage has been orientated as for future PV panel installation, if we get there. The chicken coop and green house kitsets are in the garage for later construction, along with fencing materials for grape, berry and kiwi fruit fencing.

So, after wearing myself a wee bit ragged to get to this stage before our second child is due (3.5 weeks!) its time for one last pre-baby effort to get the forest garden main plantings in. The area has had 3 silage covers over it for a couple of months to get the grass under control, and the troops have been called in for an early winter planting day. I look forward to being in this position in another years time, to look back and see what we have achieved.
