Waiariki Gardening

Every Thursday at 12.30pm, our group head down to Waiariki Institute of Technology on Cutler Crescent in Whakatane to get our hands dirty!  You're welcome to join us.

Do you have any suggestions on what's good to plant in a community garden at this time of year?  We're doing some propagating of fruit tree cuttings, and I this week we'll be sowing some seeds.  What's good to sow now?

Jerusalem artichokes

Have you thought about putting in some jerusalem artichokes? Not something to sow. You plant the tubers, they grow over the summer, die down in autumn, and then you can dig them up whenever you want over winter. I've just dug some up and divided them. If you don't know what they're like, this is thet time to locate some in shops. I bought some the other day for $2/kg. Personally, I think they're divine.

Where did you buy them?

Where did you buy them? I would like to put in a kilo or two myself. Do you have a contact number I could call - and who could mail them to me?

Ditto!  I'm not sure we have any locally, so I might have to get some in!  Thanks for that great idea Heidi :)

Sourcing Jerusalem artichokes, plus a few other suggestions

I've bought jerusalem artichokes in the past from several organic shops: most recently a little shop in Warkworth (across from the Four Square) but also Organic World (Pt Chevalier, Auckland) and Ceres Organics (Ellerslie, Auckland). I'd imagine your local organic vege shop could source them. (Yes, you just plant the same tubers that you buy to eat). Also, I've noticed Koanga Gardens have two sorts in their catalogue. I should also mention that jerusalem artichokes can also become weeds, and apparently several streams in west Auckland are laden with them. Someone locally (weed control at the Council?) might know where you could dig them up. Mind you, that might be a good continual source, so you wouldn't need to plant them. He he,

Koanga Gardens also have Chinese Artichokes. I'm intending to harvest my first ones tomorrow. They look like maggots, so it'll be interesting. If they're nice, they'd be another thing to plant now. You can google Koanga Gardens for contact details.

And don't forget about taking cuttings or divisions of perennials. I've found Chilean Guava strikes from cuttings readily (originally from Koanga Gardens too - it's a plant that fruits in the shade!) If you can find someone with society garlic, it's a fantastic plant, and now's a good time to divide it.

Garlic should be put in the

Garlic should be put in the ground about mid-winter. Chop a clove up into maybe 3 pieces and just push it into the ground, about an inch down

Make sure it's not Chinese

Chinese garlic will sprout but won't grow roots, which is just as well because they carry diseases that could wipe out our NZ garlic industry, and they have all been fumigated with methyl bromide before entering the country.

Asparagus

I promised my little girl I'd buy her some asparagus plants for her new vege garden, but the garden centre sold out in JULY! Oh no! I don't want seeds, as they take 3 years. Is anyone out there dividing their asparagus? Do you have too many plants? Please help.

starting a community garden

I've just read Kristy's comment on the gardening at Waiariki in Whakatane.  How did you get it started?  I'm in Rotorua (no transition town here yet) and am wondering if I could start a community garden through Waiariki Institute of Technology here, or through some other channel.  Did you contact Waiariki first?  What did you say?  How did you go about it?
