I've probably missed this - or have I? In the UK I was brought up with council allotments forming an important part of every community. Even in big cities, small areas of maybe 1/4 acre to 2 acres were put aside and divided up into "allotments" by the council for local residients to rent at a pepper corn rate. An allotment, maybe 10m x 4 m, would be rented for maybe $25 a year and that family had exclusive use of that section to grow vegies and fruit on. One or two people even had chooks on their allotment. This fostered a love of the soil, family weekend activities, and community spirit. Exchanging or donating expertise, surplus runner beans and spuds was common place.
Has anyone come across this in NZ? Would our councils be prepared to give this a go? To me it's an obvious way to achieve many of the transition towns aims.
