Allotments

I've probably missed this - or have I? In the UK I was brought up with council allotments forming an important part of every community. Even in big cities, small areas of maybe 1/4 acre to 2 acres were put aside and divided up into "allotments" by the council for local residients to rent at a pepper corn rate. An allotment, maybe 10m x 4 m, would be rented for maybe $25 a year and that family had exclusive use of that section to grow vegies and fruit on. One or two people even had chooks on their allotment. This fostered a love of the soil, family weekend activities, and community spirit. Exchanging or donating expertise, surplus runner beans and spuds was common place.

Has anyone come across this in NZ? Would our councils be prepared to give this a go? To me it's an obvious way to achieve many of the transition towns aims.

no allotments here

Yeah unfortunately or fortunately we didn't run the risk of starving during WW2 so allotments never happened here.

There are community gardens all around the place though. Perhaps this site needs to have a directory of all of the community gardens in the country!

We dont have the same

We dont have the same Coronation St housing style here in NZ, so people tend to look to their own sections. Here on Waiheke we have four community gardens and a public orchard underway and in various stages of development. And we are scheming a thing called "The Farmer Brigade" as a way of getting land that is in public and private ownership, into productive food growing.

Community Garden Forum

Hi, I was wondering whether we need a community garden forum on this website. I would love to see what other people are trying, and have a few specific queries. Cheers, Heidi

Hi Gary,

Thanks for that. The walls of the raised beds are really cool, eh?

We are trying

With the various infill of the standard section (quarter or fifth acre) into half size the need for allotments is being raised at Council level with some positive leads.  Nothing happening yet, but the wheels are turning in the bureaucracy to see if it could happen.  This is a long term project and the work behinds the scenes with council officers is needed before the sheeple will consider this an option.

We discussed this for Ashhurst the other day at a gardeners meeting.  A suggestion to use vacant ground for potatos, corn and pumpkin seemed to be an easy care solution.  Produce could go to the food banks and other needy and labour supplied by PD workers.  Still to investigate but it may prompt other activities.

From there we have some locations of public land identified for orchards and gardens or allotments.  A good place to learn about gardening in a communal way and take back the expertise to home gardens for personal use, while leaving the bigger public areas for larger land based crops.

Fingers crossed on these suggestions.

Support

I/we are very keen on supporting this as a whole , due to the fact that we have little time for maintaining a garden whilst we work abroad. But here is a better idea, people could use and transform our yard, although not that large a section, as well as keep an eye on it for us while away.... food for thought there, i will get back to this page once discussed with the better half in my life

Share Gardens

Here in Brooklyn, Wellington we run a number of "Share Gardens" where people offer their garden for others with more time or interest to cultivate. We have drawn up some guidelines"lessons learnt" which we would be happy to share. We also have a community Orchard which is on council land.
