Some local events and actions on Waiheke

It's nice to be home after a week away traveling around the lower North Island visiting nine Transition Towns and speaking at as many events. With US going through major financial wobbles, people are starting to look at things differently, and the public meetings around the country, particularly on the subject of local food growing, are drawing bigger numbers than ever.

At each place I went I shared a short video presentation (actually a slide show with pics), of New Zealand's one year celebration of Transition, which has since made it onto Rob Hopkin's website. Rob is the UK founder of the Transition Towns concept.

Here are a few things to draw to your attention relating mostly to local actions.

Transition Towns will feature on Campbell Live this Thursday - 7pm TV3 - after interviews had yesterday with the Transition folks in Raglan.

Blackpool Reserve is getting Organiponico Raised beds built this Sunday. Please do come along and help. We will be building three 10metre beds along the Eastern boundary of the Reserve with the support of Gary Wilton from the Council, who has managed to provide all the materials for them. From mid morning.

David Blume is visiting Waiheke and will be presenting at Tivoli Bookshop (under Retravision) on Tuesday evening from 7:00pm. David is author of Alcohol Can be a Gas about local organic biomass production and conversion to alcohol as a fuel. See this weeks Gulf News article for full details.

The Eco Show is a happening thing this year in Taupo, with more of everything, and lots of good reasons to go.

The community application for the lease of Harbour Masters is in the hands of the Council. Imagine this as the Waiheke hub for all the many and varied community projects, meetings, presentations, celebrations, workshops, resource library and more.

We live in exciting times.
