Peak Oil For Saudi Arabia confirmed by WikiLeaks
Projections by peak oil people that Saudi Arabia oil reserves have been grossly overstated (by 40%) and that the country can no longer prevent world oil prices rising have been confirmed in confidential cables from the US Consulate, released by WikiLeaks
Saudi Arabia is a "swing" producer and for many decades has been able to influence the world price for oil. Peak-oilists have been saying for years that Saudi Arabia has already, or will soon reach "peak oil", and that when it does the world's oil production will peak also. The cables show that the US fears that Saudi Arabia, the world's largest crude oil exporter, may not have enough reserves to prevent oil prices escalating.
Sadad al-Husseini, a geologist and former head of exploration at the Saudi oil monopoly Aramco met the US consul general in Riyadh in November 2007 and told the US diplomat that Aramco's 12.5m barrel-a-day capacity needed to keep a lid on prices could not be reached. According to the cables, which date between 2007-09, Husseini, said Saudi Arabia might reach an output of 12m barrels a day in 10 years - but before then – possibly as early as 2012 – global oil production would have hit its highest point. This crunch point is known as "peak oil". Husseini said that at that point Aramco would not be able to stop the rise of global oil prices because the Saudi energy industry had overstated its recoverable reserves to spur foreign investment. He argued that Aramco had badly underestimated the time needed to bring new oil on tap. Seven months later, the US embassy in Riyadh went further in two more cables.
"Our mission now questions how much the Saudis can now substantively influence the crude markets over the long term. Clearly they can drive prices up, but we question whether they any longer have the power to drive prices down for a prolonged period."
A fourth cable, in October 2009, claimed that escalating electricity demand by Saudi Arabia may further constrain Saudi oil exports, as the country would have to “canabalise” more of its oil production for internal use such as water purifying and to generate electricity.
More proof if we needed it that the US and other western nations (including NZ) have known from some time that an oil crunch is looming, but they have chosen not to tell us !

Re: Peak Oil For Saudi Arabia confirmed by WikiLeaks
I see the release of this information as being very significant as it confirms what most people in the Peak-Oil movement have known for some time. When the prices go up we cannot rely on the Saudis or anyone else to come to the rescue and pump more oil. World oil production HAS peaked and we may well have come off the so-called bump plateau and headed for collapse.
The reasons for this will not always be clear and related to:
a0 global debt and attempt to create more money/capital through QE2 etc
b) rapid increase in food prices due to trading in food futures as well as crop failures in Russia, Australia and now China.
However in the background is the peaking of global oil production and the fact that oil is unlikely to fall, certainly to post -2008 levels.
It is definitely time to be concerned and to look at our own concerns as well as invest in social capital.
Add the above to the growing
Add the above to the growing enmity between Saudi and USA and we could see shortages imminently.
"The king chastised the president for his treatment of Egypt and its president Hosni Muhbarak calling it a disaster that would generate instability in the region and imperil all the moderate Arab rulers and regimes which had backed the United States until now. Abdullah took Obama to task for ditching America's most faithful ally in the Arab world and vowed that if the US continues to try and get rid of Mubarak, the Saudi royal family would bend all its resources to undoing Washington's plans for Egypt and nullifying their consequences".

It turns out that Sadad al
It turns out that Sadad al Husseini has been publically saying similar things for years. Google his name and see http://www.google.co.nz/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.m...
So what the wikileaks cables show is not new information - it just shows that the US govt is aware of what al Husseini is saying.
