Opotiki Community Marketplace

During one of the first Transition Town meetings held in Opotiki we explored actions that we could take to create more resilience in our town.  With the goals of increased self-sufficiency, greater support of our local growers, and providing an economic buffer for home gardeners, the idea was born to create a Local Marketplace. » Read more

Kay Baxter's Organic Gardening Course

Kay Baxter of Koanga Gardens has a noticeboard on the window of the Flying Pig cafe on Church St.

Starting on the 23rd of July 2008 until the 17th of Dec she will be running an Organic Gardening Course at her gardens at Whitianga Bay, about a 35 min drive from Opotiki.  The course cost is $195, and it runs from 9am to 1pm every Wednesday.  This is such a worthwhile course to attend, it would be great to get some expressions of interest from Opotiki and Torere so we can combine travel. » Read more

We can show you how.  » Read more

Garden Make-overs

Garden Make-overs

We are underway in our initiative to help neighbourhoods get started with back-yard vege-gardens. Our flyer has been distributed, and a team of volunteers has been gathered to help people with planning their garden spaces. Part of our job is to raise awareness with Landlords about the benefits of allowing tenants to put in a vegetable garden. » Read more

Future Initiatives

Pumpkin Competition

Enthusiasm is building for an annual Opotiki Vegetable Growing competition, to be promoted to school children in the region.

Nursery Fruit Trees

A near perfect site has been found to hold hundreds of fruit trees before planting and distribution. All this site needs is a gate in the fence. So we are looking for help to find a gate somewhere and put it in the right place. » Read more

Tool Library

Tool Library.

We have a venue and a collection of tools! Central Service Centre in King St has agreed to be a drop in point for all donations of hand-tools, and kick started the library with a Rotary Hoe! Mitre Ten has helped with a donation of some spades and forks, and trowels.  We are still accepting all contributions, so bring in what-ever spades, forks etc you have that you are not using and we will use them to help with the Garden Make-overs. » Read more

Previous Events

The third Public Meeting was held on Sunday May 25th at the Heritage Arts centre.

The Twelve Steps of Transition were revisited, and we broke into groups to discuss the various projects we have planned. Groups were the food-co-op, the Market Site, Garden Make-overs, and a Submissions to the Council Annual Plan group.

Every group came away with a list of immediate actions to take, and these projects are starting to turn into reality. Many groups still need people to help, and we are still working on a venue. » Read more

Vanload of Opotiki Coast to Rotorua!

We are taking a vanload of TTOC to Rotorua Green Drinks to hear Lynda Hallinan speak. We are leaving at 3.30 to arrive by 5.30. Lynda will be speaking from 6pm. There is plenty of room in the van, so contact Kazel on 3155055 to reserve a seat. Lynda Hallinan is the editor of the NZ Gardener magazine, and has been living almost entirely self-sufficiently for 18 months. Her books of gardening and cooking seasonally are a true inspiration, with so much practical advice for us in NZ.
